Yesterday was amazing! Over 80 Yr9 students thoroughly enjoyed the Christmas cookery demonstrations. A big thank you to Mary for your ongoing financial support and interest in providing wonderful opportunities for our food students. A big thank you to Colin who gives up his valuable free time to share his experience and knowledge reflecting key learning and skills in food preparation, cooking and presentation. We even had an email from a parent saying how beneficial this course is for her son.
The team from the Christchurch Food Festival Education Trust have visited the school for many years and have taught children the value of choosing a balanced diet. The children are also given the opportunity to prepare dishes to re-inforce this teaching. The team are extremely well organised allowing the children to maximise this learning opportunity.
The pace of the lesson and the engagement of the children is outstanding. The sessions have clear objectives and are well structured with resources effectively deployed and we have received many positive comments from parents and teachers.
“The Life Skills course was incredibly well organised and most successful. Our students were extremely lucky to work alongside a professional chef for 7 weeks, who was a very patient, calm and inspiring role model.
This practical course was full of hands-on cooking experience and perfect for our Skilled for Life students. Providing the ingredients meant that they were all able to experience handling and eating a wider range of foods than they might usually buy or try.
The visit to the Pig in Brockenhurst exposed the students to fine dining and growing and cooking food for a commercial hotel. This has been a wonderful venture.”
“Our students have benefitted from Ian Hewitt’s expertise over the past few weeks. I believe this was evident in the high standard of cooking demonstrated at the competition. The judge’s comments were encouraging for our students, many of whom had not attempted this type of cooking before; this is a tremendous boost to their confidence and has hopefully ignited a lifelong passion for cooking.” We are very proud to be able to say that one of our previous participants of this programme, has trained as a chef at the Ritz hotel in London and another more recently has secured himself a place (both with the help of the Trust) at Buckingham Palace. It is very clear to me that this experience has played a key part in enabling them to achieve this”
“A big thank you for coming to our school to run cookery workshops. The two days were very successful and we have had lots of feedback from the children. We really value the time and commitment you give to the school. We want to engage all our children in understanding more about healthy food choices, nutrition and how to cook for themselves and their families. The sessions you delivered, ably led by local chefs, encouraged the children to try new foods and we hope it has given them confidence and enthusiasm to enhance their cooking skills for the future.”
“Thank you so much for coming to our school. The course you ran was a great success and we were able to enjoy the many positives to come out of it over many months. Our students gained so much from the challenge the competition presented and it helped to raise the standard of their GCSE controlled assessment. Each year the cookery challenge helps them to raise their game and they manage to exceed my expectations of them. Our students and their families are most grateful for all of your support.”
“This course was ‘par excellence’. Please pass my congratulations and thanks to Ian – the students loved the way that he taught them and led the sessions. They were highly motivated by the course and it complemented their Year 11 GCSE studies very well indeed.
We particularly liked the last session where the students were able to design their own menu for an invited group of families and friends. As always, the visit to The Pig at Brockenhurst was an excellent day
A huge thanks from all at Highcliffe, especially the Key Stage 4 team, the students and their families.”
I have loved this course and learnt more skills than I have in my school catering course in the past year.
Before this course I didn’t know how to joint a chicken or fillet fish. It has taught me so much.
This course has taught me how to cook properly and how to de-bone a fish and chop it’s head off. Amazing!
I really enjoyed this course and have learnt a lot about basic skills, which would help me a lot in the future as I really want to be a chef. Thanks!
I loved doing this course it developed skills that I will use in my everyday life. I will always remember it for ever. Thank you.
