Junior Cook of the Year

This is a competition run in each of the three Christchurch secondary schools and is supported by Christchurch Rotary Club. Students are asked to design a healthy meal for two people at a cost of no more than £16. The Trust arranges for local chefs to launch the competition by giving inspiring demonstrations to the students who then go on to design their own menus. After six weeks of planning, TV chef Lesley Waters visits the schools with the President of Rotary to select the finalists who will cook against the other schools.

Benefits for the students include learning to plan a balanced healthy menu and working to a time plan in order to cook a two course meal (something not always allowed for with shorter lesson times offered in several schools). Several students have gone on to do the Rotary Young Chef competition and go on to take careers in 5 star hotels as a result.
